IMO: Impact based color-coded warnings on web
The Meteorological Office is launching a new, color-coded warning system on November 1, thereby advancing service to the public and to stakeholders. The main changes are that the new system will be impact based and replaces an older system where only climatological thresholds were used as markers for warnings. The forecasters will be accounting for various societal and meteorological circumstances when issuing warnings
As in other European countries, the new warnings are displayed in colors, where each color represents probability of the forecast and the estimated societal impact of the weather. Weather warnings are issued by IMO in association with Civil Protection and other relevant stakeholders.
Weather warnings may be issued up to 5 days in advance. Warnings 3–5 days will be issued for the whole country, and 1–2-day warnings will be issued for smaller forecasting areas. All warnings will appear on the website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office and be available through IMO's web-service.
