Measurements from early morning 23 May 2011. Two ash layers can be detected, at altitudes of 500 and 1200 m.
The LIDAR transmits laser beams into the atmosphere and measures the resulting reflection via backscattering. The instrument is used to estimate the amount of ash in the atmosphere.
