Wind-chill table
Based on the wind-chill temperature index
The wind-chill temperature index is based on a human face model, providing an accurate, understandable, and useful formula for calculating the dangers from winter winds and low temperatures.
The index uses wind speed at an average height of 1.5 m, the typical height of an adult human face, based on readings from the national standard height of 10 m, which is the typical height of an anemometer. It incorporates heat transfer theory, i.e. heat loss from the body to its surroundings, during cold and breezy or windy days.
The table below covers the range of likely wind speeds and temperatures in Iceland. For instance, at air temperature of -12 °C and wind speed of 12 m/s, the wind-chill equals -24°C in calm weather.
