Weekly overview September 18th - 24th 2023
Around 1260 earthquakes were recorded last week, of these around 1000 have been manually checked. Six earthquakes were of magnitude M3 or larger. Seismic activity is still high in the Reykjanes Peninsula and around 860 events were recorded there. On Sunday a swarm began at Geitafell mountain, south of Bláfjöll ski area. On Sunday evening three M>=3 earthquakes occurred there, Mw3,3 and M3,2 at around 20:50 UTC and M3,0 at 23:35. The other two M~3 events occurred north of Iceland, on the Kolbeinsey Ridge and in the Western Volcanic Zone, near mount Skjaldbreiður, where seismic activity has been ongoing since beginning of July.
