Overview of Earthquake activity

Earthquake activity throughout the country is described in a weekly summary that is written by a Natural Hazard Specialist. The weekly summary is published on the web every Tuesday. It covers the activity of the previous week in all seismic areas and volcanic systems in the country. If earthquake swarms are ongoing or significant events such as larger earthquakes have occurred during the week, they are specifically discussed.

Weekly Overview, 6 - 12. March, 2023

Over 500 earthquakes were detected last week by IMO‘s SIL seismic network, which is more than in week 9. when 390 earthquakes were measured. The largest earthquake of M3.8 was mesured ENE of Grímsey island in a earthquake swarm there which lasted form Mars 10. to Mars 11. counting more than 100 events. Four earhquakes over M3,0 were mesured in Mýrdalsjökull glacier, whith a comperitavly high activity with 50 or more events. By Mt. Herdubreið and Herðubreiðartögl around 70 earhquakes were mesured. Around 40 earhquakes were mesured in SW-Hengill region by Húsmúli. And just southwest of the Reykjanes peninsula around 20 earhquakes were mesured in a cluster on Mars 6.
