Weekly Overview, 3 - 9. April, 2023
Around 450 earthquakes were detected last week by IMO‘s SIL seismic network, a little more than last week but comparable to the week before that. The largest earthquakes this week were a a part of a minor earthquake swarm about 70 km north of Siglufjörður that took place from 4.-6. April and were 3 events measured larger than magnitude 3, the largest measuring M3.5 on 5. April. Another M3.5 was measured this week 200 km SW of Jan Mayen.
Earthquake
activity this week was quite evenly scattered along the generally seismically
active regions, but the most prominent activity this week, besides north of
Siglufjörður, was an earthquake swarm that started on April 5th just west of
Mt. Herðubreið counting around 100 events. Other mentionable activity was the
continuation of the swarm by Högnhöfði just north of Úthlíð in South Iceland
that started last week. One earthquake was detected in Hekla this week.
