Overview of Earthquake activity

Earthquake activity throughout the country is described in a weekly summary that is written by a Natural Hazard Specialist. The weekly summary is published on the web every Tuesday. It covers the activity of the previous week in all seismic areas and volcanic systems in the country. If earthquake swarms are ongoing or significant events such as larger earthquakes have occurred during the week, they are specifically discussed.

Weekly Overview, 27. February - 5. March, 2023

Around 390 earthquakes were detected last week by IMO‘s SIL seismic network, which is slightly less than last week when around 440 earthquakes were detected. The largest earthquke of the week on land was M3.4 north of Mt. Herðubreið on March 5th. There were quite m any earthquakes measured in Mýrdalsjökull and the largest one was of M3.2 on February 27th . One eathquake was detected in Hofsjökull, one in Tungnafellsjökull and one in Mt. Hekla.
