Around 3000 earthquakes were detected this third week of 2024, however only 650 of which have been manually reviewed.
The largest earthquake of the week was in Bárðarbunga on the 17th of January, M4.1. The second largest earthquake was on the 15th of January, M2.7 in the same area.
Ongoing and increasing activity is near Grímsfjall and around 25 earthquakes have been detected there, but the glacial flood is decreasing.
Seismic activity continues to decrease in the area of the magma dyke near Grindavík and deformation signals seen on GPS devices suggest significant slowdown of ground movement compared to previous days. This information suggest that magma is no longer flowing into the dyke which was formed on the 14th of January. However, clear signals of a continued land uplift are still being detected beneath Svartsengi.No activity has been since the 16th of January and the eruption has formally ended on the 19th of January.
