Time: 08. Feb 2024, 14:30 GMT
Color code: Orange
Volcano id: 371020
Activity summary:
The eruption which commenced this morning at 06:02 UTC continues from the fissure which opened between Stóra-Skógafell and Sýlingafell. Since 13:35 UTC the plume, until then primarily gas rich, turned to be dark in colour. This could be explained by local minor explosions which might occur when the magma interacts with local ground water reservoirs. The plume might bring some amounts of particles which are dispersed quickly in the atmosphere at low altitudes. However, radar and satellite images do not confirm presence of ash in the atmosphere.
Cloud height:
2.5 km
Other cloud information:
No ash is confirmed via radar and satellite images. The volcanic plume is visible from satellite images and it is moving towards South.
Remarks:
The eruption is occurring in the same region as the previous eruption in 18 December 2023. More information are accessible here: https://www.vedur.is/eldfjoll/eldgos-a-reykjanesi/frettir-og-vidvaranir/
