Time: 22. Dec 2023, 14:59 GMT
Color code: Yellow
Volcano id: 371020
Activity summary:
The effusive eruption which commenced at 22.17 UTC nearby Sundhnúkgigar on 18 December has stopped. No activity has been detected in the area since the morning of 22 December. A total of ~12 millions m3 of lava has been emitted and covered an area of about 3.4 km2. The flux of SO2, as measured by DOAS, was assessed to be between 10 and 350 kg/s on 19 December.
Currently magma continues to accumulate under the Svartsengi region and this suggests that the event which occurred on 18 December will most likely repeat again in the next weeks/months. The timeline of the next magmatic propagation (and/or eruption) is though very uncertain.
In light of the lack of active vents and the reduced level of volcanic activity the aviation color code is lowered to YELLOW.
Cloud height:
No eruption ongoing.
Other cloud information:
No eruption ongoing.
Remarks:
For the time being the main hazard is limited to the fresh lava field which continues to cool down and release little amount of volcanic gas.
