FutureVolc
European volcanological supersite in Iceland
FutureVolc is a monitoring system and network for the future. The supersite concept implies integration of space and ground based observations for improved monitoring and evaluation of volcanic hazards, and open data policy.
A part of the project has an Arctic dimension with the development of earthquake monitoring instruments to place on glaciers.
The Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland and the IMO lead the project, which is the most comprehensive pan-European research Icelandic scientists have led. It seeks to integrate research on volcanic eruptions, monitoring systems, preparedness and response.
Horizon 2020, the EU framework programme for research and innovation, gave an overview of FutureVolc in a news piece in September 2014: Increasing our understanding of volcanic eruptions.
